According to SunSmart: “There is a huge variation in UV levels across Australia. The UV level is affected by a number of factors including the time of day, time of year, cloud cover, altitude, proximity to the equator, scattering and reflection.

For most of us who work during the day, it’s important to remember that UV rays damage not only our skin, but also the durability of your polyethylene tank if it is unstabilised.

Over time, UV exposure to unstabilised polyethylene can result in compromised molecular structure, misshapen, discoloured and brittle tanks. Craftech describes this process as “the deterioration of physical properties such as loss of impact strength, changes in color, cracking, loss of elongation and tensile strength or chalking of the surface.”

TTi has worked in with our powder (raw plastic) suppliers to create a completely UV stabilised, opaque material. This means it is 100% safe for potable water, as harmful UV rays cannot penetrate the tank.

Additives are used to reduce the effects of exposure from ultraviolet radiation, significantly increasing the life expectancy of polyethylene, by guarding your tank from the physical and chemical results of UV radiation. Some popular UV stabilisers include: ultraviolet absorbers, and hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS), both of which effectively block UV sunlight.

Although UV stabilisers do protect the outer material of your tank, they will not shield your tank content from the heat. Caution should be taken when exposing chemicals and potable water to direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Whilst adding a UV stabiliser to your unit may slightly increase your expected cost, the long term benefits are significant, especially when considering the cost of repair due to degradation.
